Who am I?

Thank you for asking! My name is Rachael Smith and I'm a 22 year old Software Engineer recently graduated from The University of Salford with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Computer Science. To view my professional profile please see my LinkedIn.

I'm a definite nerd. I am a huge Star Trek fan (Voyager/DS9/TNG) and I count Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Sherlock and House amongst my addictions. I love anime (My Anime List) and play DDR, and spend a lot of my time online reading up on technology news and engaging in my various nerdy interests. I am an avid PC gamer with DOTA 2, Civilization 5 and XCOM: Enemy Within being some of my most played games recently.

What do I do?

I am a software developer and web designer. You can view my Stack Overflow and Github profiles.

I am beginning work on creating my own Fanlisting management system using JavaScript and Python. You can find some of my other recent projects in the Projects section of this site.

Things I know about:

  • Java and OO development (including Swing, Eclipse & GWT)
  • Web development using PHP, JavaScript, HTML & CSS
  • SQL databases and web service development using ASP.NET and SOAP
  • Software development methodologies including Agile
  • Testing & version control using jUnit and Mercurial
  • Troubleshooting Windows XP & 7 PCs remotely using TeamViewer, Radmin & RDP for application, email, network, printing and Operating System issues.

What is this site?

Bernkastel.co.uk is a personal website for me and serves as a portfolio of my development projects that I've worked on at University and in my spare time. Prior to being my portfolio, Bernkastel.co.uk has hosted some of my other web projects.

I made my first website when I was 13, they focused on glitter and doll graphics. I later moved onto Fanlistings which are simply an online listing of fans of a subject that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join. I created over 50 of these mini-sites on this site before retiring them due to University work taking priority.

The name Bernkastel is that of a character from one of my favourite animes. She is also known as the Witch of Miracles and has the power to make any miracle happen as long as the possibility isn't zero.
